THE VISION
The observer is permanently there. In terms of theatre design, contemplating the work from the position of the observer puts us above the plane of the subject and displaced from him or her. This is a courtesy (of the viewer) to achieve a false reading of the whole subject from the foreground to the horizon. A true reading, with a chance of not being subjectivised in the least, happens when the essence of the landscape is achieved, beyond shapes, senses and interpretation.
A courtesy too for placing us in the mirror of reality, showing a subject always in movement, temporality and change. From the same observation point, we also accept our apparent partiality and theatricality, contemplating allegories of myth, airs of mysticism and diverse horizons. As many truths as there are minds.
The masters instructing it use the gradual method, creating trajectories, suggestions, and atmospheres of knowledge vs. ignorance. From darkness to light.
The horizon used to be seen as a limit evoking those of man and, at the same time, the secret possibility of going beyond them. The horizon is that unreal place we never reach: a convention in space and time that coexists absolutely normally with us even though it is intangible. Assumed metaphysics.
On old maps, mountain ranges and rivers define natural geopolitical limits – natural boundaries. Palpable political horizons so beloved of reason. Thought – the mind – has its own mountain ranges and rivers, which delimit with silence. What is there between thought and thought?
Who hasn’t stared at the infinite so long that they cease to “see” it, seized by a state in which thoughts are dissipated? Entering into the vertigo of the horizon – into infinity – opening up a kaleidoscope of horizons. The range of diversity of apparent limits dissipated into a single abstraction, from the outside in.
Every horizon maintains its dualities while leading you on, beyond them. Because a horizon is not just the line of the summit or the sea bed; it is not the slight curvature of the earth. The horizon is not just where the sky and the earth, thoughts and silence, or the limit and the beyond meet. The horizon is in everyone’s deepest heart.
